Times-Union apologizes for Meyer/”liar” column

Florida Times-Union “reader advocate” Wayne Ezell apologized Sunday for last week’s Mike Freeman column labeling Urban Meyer, “Urban Liar.”

Newspapers make awful mistakes sometimes, hurtful, wish-we-could-get-it-back mistakes.

The Times-Union made such a mistake last Sunday, in my view, when a sports columnist wrote an incendiary piece calling University of Florida coach Urban Meyer a liar. The columnist, Mike Freeman, even introduced the nickname “Urban Liar” for the coach. …

Readers are entitled to a more civil discourse, even in sports columns. So is the coach.
