Baker learns from mistake, passes on wisdom
After an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty cost the Gators in 2004, WR Dallas Baker knows how a dumb mistake can cripple a team in a close game. Baker got on WR Percy Harvin after the freshman spiked the ball following a 58-yard TD on Saturday.
> Baker: “I told him, ‘Don’t make the same mistakes that I’ve made. Don’t go down the same path. I said, ‘I’ve done some stupid stuff since I’ve been here. Don’t make the same mistakes. Next time, just hand the ball to the official.’”
> Baker on the 2004 sissy slap that cost the Gators: “It was stupid. I’ve known since Pop Warner that you don’t retaliate. It was just dumb, just something I did in the heat of the moment that I shouldn’t have done. I thought about it practically the whole (2004) season. I would look back and think, ‘Wow, we could have beaten those guys if I hadn’t made a stupid mistake like that.’ My teammates supported me, but you would read things in the paper and see things on television. It would just make you think, ‘I can’t believe I made a stupid mistake like that.’”
> C Steve Rissler: “Dallas has had a big change. He’s one of the leaders now. His attitude has changed dramatically, and he’s one of our best receivers. He’s going to have a great year. I’m proud of Dallas. He’s really stepped it up. He knew what he did was wrong (two years ago). It’s not going to happen again.”
> Baker: “I think I’m more mature just because of how much I’ve played. You mature as you go. Once you’ve played enough you become a veteran.”
